SolRx E-Series Multidirectional & Expandable Full Body Panels

Master Device Models: E720M, E740M, E760M
Add-on Device Models: E720A, E740A, E760A

The E‑Series begins with a simple 2, 4 or 6 bulb “Master” (M) device called the E720M-UVBNB, E740M-UVBNB or E760M-UVBNB. The Master device is the “brains” of the system. It houses the digital countdown timer, a keyed switchlock to prevent unauthorized use, the main power supply connection, and brackets to mount it to a wall; all shown at the top. By itself, any Master device is completely capable of providing effective full-body UVB-Narrowband phototherapy using exactly the same Philips TL100W/01‑FS72 bulbs as found in clinical equipment and Solarc’s own 1000‑Series full-body panels. However, because there are relatively fewer 100-watt bulbs in these Master devices, full-body treatment times take longer than devices with more bulbs.

E760 Master

The 2-bulb E720M is not as wide or powerful as the 4-bulb E740M and 6-bulb E760M, but since it was introduced in 2011, it has been proven to provide effective UVB-Narrowband light treatment, and is to our knowledge the lowest cost full-body phototherapy device in the world. It is perfect for those that are not certain about the effectiveness of UVB light therapy, or those on a limited budget. The wider 4-bulb E740M and 6-bulb E760M use the same basic mainframe and provide double and triple the UVB light power of the 2-bulb E720, which means shorter treatment times. Starting with just any one of the E-Series Master devices is the perfect “future-proof” solution because it is proven effective, low cost and…

s5 374 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 10 SolRx E-Series

The system is modular, so it can at any time be very easily “expanded” by connecting one (or more) “Add‑On” (A) devices. It takes only a few minutes to fasten the bottom of the Master device to the wall, connect the two devices using the built-in hinges on the top and bottom endcaps, and plug the Add-On device’s connection cable into the receptacle on top of the Master device. The Add-On is then fully controlled by the Master. In this picture, one E720 Add-On has been connected to the left side of the E720 Master to create a 2-device, 4-bulb assembly we call “1M+1A”, meaning 1 Master plus 1 Add-On. Add-On devices can be installed on either or both sides of the Master to “Expand” the system, which is what the “E” in “E-Series” stands for: “Expandable”.

One of our most popular configurations is a Master device with three (3) Add-on devices connected, called assembly configuration “1M+3A”.

1M 1A Adjustability Illustration 8 SolRx E-Series

Once two devices are connected, the hinges allow the Add-On device to be swung open and closed just like a door using the handles provided. The devices can be fully open 180° to create a flat panel (as shown in the previous pictures), fully closed onto each other for storage, or any angle in between, such as about 120° as shown here. This creates a “multidirectional” light therapy system with significant performance advantages versus a flat panel type of device, such as Solarc’s own 1000‑Series. Most importantly, because the devices can be individually angled to conform to any human body shape, the assembly is geometrically more efficient at delivering UV-light around the patient, and there is less UV-light spilled out into the room. Slippery plastic sliders (or “skis”) on the bottom and handles on the sides allow the devices to be individually positioned to create any desired configuration.

E-Series devices are available for use with either 120-volt supply power as commonly found in North American homes, or 208 to 230-volt for other countries and/or larger systems including full booths, which may require installation of a special electrical receptacle and a country-specific power supply cord (both not included). For the 120-volt 2-bulb E720M Master device, a total of 10 bulbs can be operated, as shown in the above picture of an “E720:1M+4A” (1 Master plus 4 Add-On) assembly, with 2 Add-Ons on each side of the Master. The larger E740M and E760M Master 120-volt devices can operate up to a total of 12 bulbs. For all systems, the “total number of bulbs” includes those in the Master device. The 208-230 volt “-230V” devices can operate twice the number of bulbs; the E720M-230V can operate up to 20 bulbs, and the E740M-230V and E760M-230V up to 24 bulbs. The larger 4-bulb E740M and 6-bulb E760M use a higher-rated power inlet and power supply cord than the 2-bulb E720M. In all cases, a 3-prong GROUNDED electrical receptacle is mandatory. Note: If “-230V” does not appear in the model#, the device is rated for 120-volt.

1M1A timelapse x1 C SolRx E-Series
There are many possibilities. For example, two 120-volt 4-bulb E740 devices could be assembled to create this efficient 8-bulb system that is especially portable when the devices are folded up face-to-face with each other to protect the bulbs. Note: For worldwide electrical compatibility, this system (and the more powerful 12-bulb version using two E760 devices) is available on special request as “universal voltage”, so it can be used on any electrical system 120 to 230 volts, 50/60Hz. A special country-specific power supply cord may be required, is not included, and is best sourced locally.

The E‑Series system’s ability to expand and adjust is unmatched by any product in the world. No other phototherapy device can at any time be expanded from a simple cost-effective panel, to a multidirectional system, and on to a complete booth that completely surrounds the patient. And since all the arrangements are built-up from relatively small and lightweight devices, the system is able to be assembled and moved by just one person. There is absolutely nothing else like it!

Hex Full Booth 8 SolRx E-Series
In this picture, a complete wrap-around E740-230V 24-bulb “booth” or “cabinet” is created by connecting five E740A-230V Add-On devices to an E740M-230V Master device. Together this popular 6-device assembly would be known as configuration “E740-230V:1M+5A” or “E740M-230V+(5)E740A-230V” or simply the “E740-230V-HEX”. Note: Creating full booths using 6-bulb E760-230V devices is not practical because, being limited to only 24 bulbs, only 4 such devices can be used and the resulting booth is square and too small.
Full Booth with E720 Doors 8 SolRx E-Series
Another nice option for a full booth is to substitute one of the E740A Add-On 4-bulb devices with two E720A 2-bulb devices, which makes for a pair of easy to operate patient entry doors. And yet another option is to create a smaller booth using two E740 devices plus four E720 devices, for a total of 16 bulbs.
As with smaller E-Series systems, full booths must be prevented from falling over, which is possible if the system is folded up onto itself. This can be achieved by fastening one device to a wall as previously instructed, which has the advantage of allowing independent device positioning. Alternatively, “Locking Plates” can be fastened between adjacent pairs of skis to lock the devices in position relative to each other, so as a group they form a fixed stable assembly, in which case none of the devices need to be fastened to a wall.

The Finer Details

s7 019 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
E-Series devices are compact and thin; measuring only about 3″ thick by 6-feet high. E720 2-bulb devices are about 13″ wide and weigh about 33 pounds. E740 and E760 devices are about 21″ wide and weigh about XX and YY pounds. The E-Series is by far the most easy to handle full-body phototherapy device in the world!
s7 018 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 9 SolRx E-Series
The bulbs are designed as close to the floor as possible to maximize UVB delivery to the feet and lower legs, which reduces the need for a patient platform. Not only is this safer, but no floor space is needed for a stool. (Although if the feet are particularly affected, a sturdy stool can useful.)
s1 117 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 9 SolRx E-Series
All Solarc devices use genuine Philips UVB-Narrowband /01 311nm medical lamps. For all E-Series “UVBNB” models, it’s the popular TL100W/01‑FS72 6-foot, 100-watt bulb. It is the most common 6-foot long UVB-Narrowband bulb in North America. E-Series devices will also accept the longer TL100W/01 UVB-Narrowband lamp as found in Europe, but the fit is tight and somewhat onerous. Solarc is a Philips/Signify authorized original equipment manufacturer (OEM). Every year we supply many thousands of Philips UVB-Narrowband bulbs to dermatologists and phototherapy clinics worldwide.
s2 384 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 9 SolRx E-Series
To mechanically connect devices, built-in hinge lugs on the top and bottom endcaps are fastened using the 1/4-inch machine-screws and nylon-insert locknuts supplied with each Add-On device. The device positions can be locked by fully tightening these fasteners, or in the case of full booths, by using Locking Plates attached to the skis as discussed above.
s3 421 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 9 SolRx E-Series
Slippery hard white plastic slider “skis” on the bottom allow the devices to glide smoothly over any type of floor, while at the same time preventing the devices from opening more than 180°. The large footprint of the skis minimizes the ground-pressure and impressions made on a carpet.
s5 179 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 9 SolRx E-Series
Handles on both sides of every device make it easy to adjust the device positions. The same heavy duty handles are also of course great for carrying the devices.

Expandable, Adjustable & Multidirectional – So many possibilities!

s2 352 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 9 SolRx E-Series
By adding one Add-On device to the original Master device, the number of bulbs doubles to create a compact and efficient 4-bulb “1M+1A” (1 Master plus 1 Add-On) multidirectional system. At the yellow arrow, note that the lower mounting brackets have been deployed to hold the bottom of the Master device to the wall. These brackets prevent the bottom of the Master device from being pulled away from the wall when Add-On devices are being positioned by pulling on the handles.
1M 1A E740 Angled 8 SolRx E-Series
Similarly, by adding one 4-bulb E740A Add-On device to the original 4-bulb E740M Master device, you can create an 8-bulb “E740:1M+1A” system.  Larger E-Series devices have a lower cost-per-bulb because there are lower component costs, for example for the main frame, connection cables and packaging.
Top View of SolRx E760 Master & Add-On Connected
Likewise, by adding one 6-bulb E760A Add-On device to the original 6-bulb E760M Master device, you can create a 12-bulb “E760:1M+1A” system, which is both powerful and transportable. Note: For worldwide electrical compatibility, this system is available on special request as “universal voltage”, so it can be used on any electrical system 120 to 230 volts, 50/60Hz. A special country-specific power supply cord may be required, is not included, and is best sourced locally.
wp02 inset multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp1 3 SolRx E-Series
For storage, the Add-On device in any 1M+1A system can be closed to hide the Master device. This folded configuration is also a good way to transport two devices together [inset] by simply fastening the hinge lugs together on both sides (at all four corners). When two E-Series devices are closed face-to-face like this, it provides excellent protection for the bulbs, and it is strong enough that some items can be stacked on top. Note: For full closure of two E720 2-bulb devices and all devices with the Clear Acrylic Window (CAW) option, the key first needs to be removed from the switchlock.
s3 449 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series

A particularly elegant setup is this 3-device E720:1M+2A 6-bulb system, assembled with one Add-On device on each side of the Master. Note that there are two receptacles on top of the Master device, to accept Add-On device connection cables from both sides of the Master, if that is the preferred arrangement. This 6-bulb multidirectional setup can deliver about the same total amount of Narrowband UVB light as a 10-bulb flat panel.

1M 2xE720A Top Half 7 SolRx E-Series

You can even connect E-Series devices with different numbers of bulbs together, provided that they are all of the same voltage rating, and that the total number of bulbs in the system does not exceed the electrical limits of the Master device, which are provided on the labeling and in the device. In this picture, two 2-bulb E720A devices have been added to a 4-bulb E740M Master device.

1M 2xE740A Top Half 7 SolRx E-Series
Another great setup is this 3-device 12-bulb E740:1M+2A 12-bulb system, which is the maximum number of bulbs that can be operated by a 120-volt E740M Master device. There are no special electrical requirements for this configuration; it uses a common household 120-volt, 15-amp, 3-prong (grounded) outlet. The Master device is fastened to the wall at the top and bottom, and the Add-On devices attached to each side of the Master.
s3 444 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series

Add-On devices can alternatively be installed to just one side of the Master, such as two Add-Ons on the left side of the Master as shown here. Note how the left-most Add-On cable connects to the middle Add-On device, and the middle Add-On cable in turn to the Master device, which is sometimes referred to as a “daisy chain”.

s3 516 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
By adding a 4th E720A Add-On device, the maximum total number of bulbs operated by one 120-volt E720M Master device has been reached (10). There are no special electrical requirements for this configuration; it uses a common household 120-volt, 15-amp, 3-prong (grounded) outlet. The yellow arrows point to the handles that are used to position the devices.
s3 640 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series

The two outermost devices in the E720:1M+4A system can be folded over to reduce the storage width to 38″ wide, best arranged with the Master device in the center as shown. The handles are vertically staggered so that left-side handles do not interfere with right-side handles when they are close to each other.

s4 093 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series

If more than five E720 120-volt devices (10 bulbs) are desired, a second Master device must be added (or alternatively a 230-volt system could be used). In this picture, viewed from the top, an E720:2M+6A assembly has been positioned into an 8-device 16-bulb octagonal booth. The same assembly could have also just as easily been formed into an oval shaped booth, to conform to a less rotund patient body shape. Countless variations are possible.

s4 036 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series

Two more E720A Add-On devices have been added to create this large 10-device, 20-bulb, C-shape configuration. Usually, the Master devices would be located next to each other so their timers are more easily operated simultaneously. In very rare cases where more than 10 devices are needed, a third Master device could be added.

For electrical safety, at the top of the Master device, fuses limit the total number of bulbs in the system. If the maximum number of bulbs is exceeded, the fuse will blow. (E720M fused power inlet shown. E740M & E760M use two separate fuseholders. 120-volt devices use only one fuse. 208-230V devices use two fuses. All E-Series fuses are 5x20mm 10-Amp Slow-Blow.)
E740M Top View C 2 e1595450682588 1 SolRx E-Series
The larger 4-bulb E740M and 6-bulb E760M use a higher rated power inlet and power supply cord than the 2-bulb E720M.
s5 176 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
Naturally, as with any door, a pinch-point gap is unfortunately created between adjacent devices. This gap is at its smallest of about 1/4″ wide when the devices are fully opened 180° to form a flat panel. The devices should therefore only be moved by using the handles provided, and fingers kept away from the gap.
s3 394 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
To minimize the danger that this pinch-point presents, Add-On devices are supplied with four thin-film Gap-Seals that can be installed under the sides of the reflector of adjacent devices; shown partially installed here.
s3 410 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
The Gap-Seals are thin and flex when the devices are opened and closed and minimize the chance that someone will close the pinch-point gap onto their fingers. The Gap-Seals should be installed if there are fears that the handles might not always be used to position the devices, if children are around, or to minimize the amount of UV light spilled out into the room.

E760A-UVBNB-CAW
A Clear Acrylic Window (CAW) is a thin sheet of UVB-transmissive plastic that fully covers and protects the bulbs, for use instead of the standard wire guard. The CAW:

  • Provides superior protection of the bulbs from patient contact and breakage,
  • Prevents the patient from touching the hot surfaces of the bulbs,
  • Includes a fan that evacuates heat from the bulb enclosure, which helps keep the patient cool.
  • Does not significantly reduce the device’s UVB light power (irradiance), due to better heat management.
  • Is not compatible with the Patient Fan (-PF) option.
  • Must be specified at the time of ordering, for example by ordering model# E740M-UVBNB-CAW.
  • Should be specified for all devices in a system.
  • Is available on all E-Series devices except E720 2-bulb “Mark1” devices.

The CAW option is recommended for E-Series devices used in a clinic (especially full booths), and wherever there is concern that the bulbs might be broken, for example by those with poor balance or adventurous young children. The CAW is also a good safety feature if the device is frequently moved, to protect the bulbs. (Solarc plans to have an upgraded E720 CAW-capable “Mark2” version available in late 2020).

E760A-UVBNB-PF

To help keep the patient cool during treatment, an optional built-in patient-controlled fan is available for E740A and E760A Add-On devices equipped with wire guards. Air is directed onto the patient from all along the vertical center band of the device and is controlled by an ON-OFF switch at the top. The Patient Fan is operational only when the bulbs are on. The Patient Fan option must be specified at the time of ordering the device, for example by ordering model# E760A-UVBNB-PF.

Rear Controller Option

for Full Booths (-RCO Option)

When a full booth is used in a phototherapy clinic, a special MASTER device with a “Rear Controller Option” (RCO) is available so the clinician controls the system from outside the booth, and the patient inside has only a count-up time display and an emergency stop pushbutton. The RCO must be specified at the time of ordering, for example by ordering model# E740M-UVBNB-RCO. Add-On devices are not affected by use of the RCO.

Artisan Timer and Switchlock Close-Up in SolRx E-Series

Master Device Components: At the top of the Master device, a digital countdown timer provides timing control to the second and has a maximum time setting of 20:00 minutes:seconds. A particularly useful feature of this timer is that it always remembers the last time setting, even if power is removed for a long period of time. This means that you will always have your last treatment time setting for reference. The time is set by simply pressing the up or down arrow keys, and the lights are turned on/off by pressing the red START/STOP button. The lights turn off automatically when the timer counts down to 00:00, several end-of-cycle beeps are sounded, and the display resets to the last time setting. The timer’s red display is easily seen through the patient goggles supplied. The timer does NOT require prescription refills from your physician. The timer’s output relay carries a UL-508 [NEMA-410] 10-Amp “Ballast” rating and has been tested by Solarc in a 10-bulb (1000-watt) device for over 30,000 on-off cycles – that’s 2 treatments per day for over 40 years. The timer is UL/ULc certified and made in the USA. A keyed switchlock is the main power disconnect for the device. By removing and hiding the key, unauthorized use can be prevented. This is an important feature, especially if kids are around because mistaking this medical UVB device for a UVA tanning machine can result in a severe sunburn! Turning the switchlock off disconnects power to the entire device, which saves the energy consumed by the timer when it is in standby mode. The labels are made from Lexan® and will not fade.

E720 Top Cap Diagram 7 SolRx E-Series
Top Cap Diagram Backside 7 SolRx E-Series
E740M Top Cap Diagram 7 SolRx E-Series
On top of the Master device endcap, there are several other important components: 1. The power supply cord connection “power inlet”, which for the E720M is combined with the fuseholder. 2. The fuseholder(s), which in all cases use 5x20mm 10-Amp Slow-Blow fuses. E740M & E760M use two separate fuseholders. 120-volt devices use only one fuse and 208-230V devices use two fuses.
3. The two black receptacles are the connection points for the left-side and right-side Add-On devices. Screw-on dust-caps are provided for use when an Add-On device cable is not connected to the receptacle. 4. The two silver coloured upper mounting brackets are permanently connected to the back of the Master device and are simply rotated into position when needed. The hole locations are marked on the wall and the supplied drywall anchors and screws fastened. Note that all of the weight of the device is resting on the floor, so these mounting brackets are only to keep the unit from falling over. The mounting brackets, therefore, do not have to be mounted to a wall stud. Add-On devices do not have mounting brackets, but they could be installed if ever needed, for example when a Master device with the Rear Controller Option (RCO) is used. 5. The serial number label includes the device model number, serial number, bulb part number, ultraviolet waveband type (which is almost always “UVB-Narrowband”), and electrical ratings such as voltage(volts-ac) and current(amps).
s7 081 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series

The 3-meter long detachable power supply cord (supplied) simply plugs into the top of the Master device and is routed behind the Master device to the electrical wall outlet. Devices rated for 120-volt use a standard household 15-amp, 3-prong (grounded) “5-15R” wall outlet as commonly found in North America – there are no special electrical requirements. Devices rated for 208-230 volt require a dedicated 208-230V single-phase circuit with a 15-Amp 2-pole circuit breaker and in North America, a NEMA 6-15R receptacle. Other countries may use a different receptacle, in which case the customer is required to supply the appropriate power supply cord; which would be 14-gauge, 3-conductor with ground, and “IEC C19” on the device end.

Backside P Clip 7 SolRx E-Series
Here an E740M power supply cord is shown routed down the back of the device and retained using the supplied black plastic P-Clips. The more capable E740M and E760M use a larger power supply cord and power inlet than the E720M.
cornermount 220wide 8 SolRx E-Series
The Master device can also be mounted in a corner; however, corner-mounting does not give enough room on the sides for connection of any Add-On devices. Another potential problem is that objects dropped behind the device will require that the device be dismounted for retrieval.
diamond hole for corner mount 220wide 8 SolRx E-Series
To corner-mount the Master device, easily identified diamond-shaped holes are provided in the sheet metal as shown. Simply mark the hole locations on the wall, screw in the wall inserts, and fasten. Add-On devices also have these holes. This picture is one of the many illustrations from in the User’s Manual.
s2 321 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
If Add-On devices are to be connected, the bottom of the Master device needs to be fastened to the wall (typically to the baseboard) to prevent it from being pulled outward when the Add-On devices are moved. The bottom of the Master device has the same white plastic ski as Add-On devices to provide a large footprint to slide smoothly over carpet, and if the Master is ever used as a moveable device in one of the many larger assembly configurations.

On top of the Add-On device, there is no timer or switchlock, but there are several other components: A. The black connection cable is permanently attached to the Add-On device and connected to the receptacle on top of an adjacent device; which could be either a Master device as in this picture, or an Add-On device. B. The black receptacle is open and waiting for the connection cable from the next left-side device. The tethered dust-cap is shown installed. The Master device also has an available receptacle on the right. There is always an open receptacle on the two outermost devices. C. Add-On devices also have a serial number label that includes the device model number, serial number, bulb part number, ultraviolet waveband type, and electrical information such as voltage(volts-ac) and current(amps) ratings. D. The hinge lugs (ears) are connected using the supplied hinge hardware, which is a simple 1/4″-20 machine-screw and nylon-insert-locknut; one set each for the top and bottom hinges and easily installed in just a few minutes.

Performance & UV Wavelengths

s1 117 340 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp1 8 SolRx E-Series

The E-Series is most often equipped with medically proven Philips UVB-Narrowband 6-foot long, 100-watt bulbs, part number “TL100W/01‑FS72”. UVB-Narrowband has become the undisputed first choice for initial and ongoing phototherapy treatment for most patients, and is widely used by dermatologists and phototherapy clinics worldwide. Indeed, the vast majority of Solarc devices sold use UVB-Narrowband, but other wavebands can be interchangeably fitted should your treatment protocol ever change. UVB-Narrowband has a very high percentage of its energy around 311 nanometers, ideally placed in the action spectrum for psoriasis and Vitamin D. It is also, of course, very effective for vitiligo and atopic dermatitis (eczema). UVB-Narrowband is also known by its Philips phosphor number /01 and several other names including: TL/01, TL01, TL‑01, UVBNB, NBUVB, NB‑311, etc. For more info about UVB-Narrowband, be sure to read our article: Understanding Narrowband UVB Phototherapy. All of the pictures on the E-Series webpages were taken with real UVB-Narrowband bulbs. Even though the vast majority of the light produced is in the invisible UVB spectrum, there is still a small amount of visible blue light that appears in the photos.

s6 459 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
Anodized aluminum reflectors reflect about 90% of incident UVB light and significantly boost the device’s total UVB output. The reflector facets are carefully angled to direct as much light out of the device onto the patient’s skin. These angles were a major consideration in the device design.
s1 124 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
This interesting picture shows a tape measure used to locate the camera lens exactly 10 inches from the device. Ten inches is at the mid-range of the recommended treatment distance of 8 to 12 inches, so this is the view that your skin sees. Note how the 1-1/2 inch diameter (T12) bulbs appear to be much wider than they actually are, verifying proper reflector design. More UVB light means shorter treatment times!
E720 touch up C e1595367510570 8 SolRx E-Series
The result is a device that looks like it has two very wide bulbs. Efforts to increase the ultraviolet light power delivery are well rewarded, especially if only a single 2-bulb E720M Master device is being used, as shown here.

Another view on the reflector. Note how the “Philips” logo is reflected. The reflectors are mirror-like in appearance.

In case your treatment protocol ever changes, several other 6-foot long phototherapy bulbs can also fit into the E-Series, including the FS72T12‑UVB‑HO (UVB-Broadband) and F72T12‑BL‑HO (PUVA 350 nm peak). E-Series devices will also accept the longer TL100W/01 UVB-Narrowband lamp as found in Europe, but the fit is tight and somewhat onerous.

Solarc Systems is Canada’s only Philips/Signify authorized original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of medical UV phototherapy equipment. We have sold well over 12,000 SolRx™ devices worldwide since our company was founded in 1992 and we are going stronger than ever, even in this age of biologic drugs. Turns out, most of us need just a little bit of light.

Handling & Other Features

s5 179p multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
The handle on the outside of the outermost device is used to move all the devices on that side of the Master device as a group. The slippery sliders (skis) on the bottom of the devices make repositioning devices easy.
s3 471 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
The left-side handles are mounted at a different height than the right-side handles to prevent interference when the handles are moved close together. In this E720:1M+2A (1 Master + 2 Add-On) arrangement, the Add-On devices on both sides of the Master have been closed to form a triangle for storage.
s5 390 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
The handles are also of course useful for carrying devices, in this case, one E720M Master device. The device is not perfectly balanced owing to the vertical staggering of the handles as explained at the previous picture. The weight of a single E720 2-bulb device is only 33 pounds (15kg).
Box Dimensions of E720 E740 60 7 SolRx E-Series

All E-Series devices are shipped one per box. A packaged E720 2-bulb device weighs only about 40 lbs (18kg) and measures 79 x 17 x 7-1/4″. Packaged E740 and E760 devices weigh about 60 lbs (27kg) and measure 79 x 17 x 7-1/4″. Polyethylene (PE) foam pads inside the heavy duty box support and protect the product within. Both the box and foam packaging are suitable for reuse or recycling.

s7 026 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
Another good way to move a pair of devices (such as the two E720 devices shown here), is to fasten them together. After removing the key from the switchlock, the devices are folded up and the hinge lugs fastened together on both sides (at all four corners) to hold the devices together face-to-face. For example, if there are 8 devices needing moving, they could be transported as four sets of 2 devices each. This method provides excellent protection for the bulbs.
s7 024 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series

The two-device E720 folded assembly measures about 6 inches thick and weighs 66 pounds (30kg). The Add-On device’s connection cable stores between the two devices. Note: while it is possible for one person to carry the devices as shown in these pictures, always consider getting a second person to help you. It can only make things easier; for example by opening doors or helping to carry – one person at each end. This is especially true when the larger E740/E760 are connected together, which weighs about 40 pounds (18kg).

s1 043 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
Another useful feature is the towel hooks on both sides at the back corners of the device. These built-in sheet metal tabs are simply bent out to create a hook.
s6 476 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
Towels can be hung from the towel hooks on the front to either or both sides. UV phototherapy treatments are best taken after a bath or shower; these towel hooks make a great place to dry your towel.
s7 067 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
One large towel can be hung to span across and cover the whole device. In this picture, an Add-On device is folded over to hide the Master device, and a towel hung over the back of the Add-On device. Alternatively, the holes in the towel hook tabs could be used to string a cord to hang a curtain.
s6 464 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
For strength and long-term durability, the endcap sheet metal is 18-gauge thick (0.048″), which is slightly thicker than a dime. This thickness provides good strength, yet allows the hinge lugs to be bent slightly if necessary for alignment.
s2 296 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
The sheet metal components are polyester powder painted to a high-quality near-automotive semi-gloss white finish.

All Solarc devices are designed and manufactured in Canada. Assembly, testing, packaging, and sales take place at Solarc’s ISO-13485:2016/MDSAP certified manufacturing plant in beautiful Springwater Township near Barrie, Ontario; about one hour north of Toronto. We’ve been in Barrie since our Company was founded in 1992. Call us toll-free at 1-866-813-3357 (705-739-8279) to arrange an appointment to visit. We would be pleased to show you how UVB-Narrowband can help with your psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, and vitamin-D deficiency challenges.

The black wire guard protects the bulbs and is removable for servicing of the bulbs and reflector. At the yellow arrows, four clips fasten the vertical wires of the guards to the sides of the device, and the tops and bottoms of the vertical wires tuck into the upper and lower endcap flanges.

An alternative to the standard wire guard is the optional Clear Acrylic Window (CAW) feature, which is a thin sheet of UVB-transmissive plastic that fully covers and protects the bulbs.

User’s Manual & Treatment Methods

exposure guideline tables 8 SolRx E-Series
A critically important feature of the SolRx™ E-Series Expandable Full Body Phototherapy System is its comprehensive User’s Manual; relentlessly developed for almost 30 years by real home phototherapy users and vetted by a variety of dermatology professionals. It includes a wealth of information so you can maximize your treatment results. Most importantly, it includes detailed exposure guidelines with treatment times for: psoriasis, vitiligo, and atopic dermatitis (eczema). For Vitamin D a supplemental document is available on request. The Exposure Guideline Tables provide a complete treatment protocol based on your skin type, the device’s UVB irradiance, and the waveband. The User’s Manual also includes:

  • Warnings about who should not use the device. (phototherapy contraindications)
  • General warnings about UVB phototherapy and equipment safety
  • Installation considerations including initial setup of the Master device, and connection of Add-On devices
  • Exposure guidelines including skin type determination, positioning and other tips
  • Usage guidelines & treatment procedure
  • Psoriasis long-term maintenance program
  • Device maintenance, bulb replacement, troubleshooting & electrical schematic.

The value of Solarc User’s Manuals has been recognized by the Ottawa Home Phototherapy Study which stated: “Nurses and dermatologists who do not operate a phototherapy center should be aware of the detailed instructions provided by Solarc Systems. Their [the dermatologist’s] role becomes more one of professional follow-up rather than one of education on the operation of the home unit.” The E-Series User’s Manual is available in English, French, and Spanish. It is printed on 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper and bound in a 3-hole folder so you can easily photocopy pages if needed. E-Series User’s Manuals also include several years of Solarc’s phototherapy calendar so you can track your results.

Treatment Positions for a Single E-Series Master Device (1M)

s5 357 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
The traditional treatment positions for home phototherapy using a panel is first with the front side of the body facing the device. The position is held until the time expires. Note that the width of the device is about the width of the patient’s torso. The model is 5ft-10in and 190lbs.
s5 356 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
Then, the patient turns around, restarts the timer and treats the back side. It is important that the ultraviolet protective goggles always be used. For males, unless affected, it is recommended that both the penis and scrotum be covered using a sock.
s5 358 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
To treat the sides of the body, the patient simply stands sideways. In this picture, the arm is held up to allow the light to better reach the side of the torso, and the hand used to cover the side of the face.
s5 359 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp 8 SolRx E-Series
There are many alternative methods. With practice, the patient can develop a custom positioning system to apply light to those areas needing it the most. An important consideration is to avoid significantly overlapping treatment sides, which could result in local overexposure and sunburn.
s5 364 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
Here, the patient is treating the front side, with special emphasis on the elbows, while at the same time blocking the face with the hands.
s5 367 multidirectional uvb narrowband psoriasis lamp SolRx E-Series
Other areas of the body can be protected by simply wearing clothing. The clothing could be modified by cutting some of it away to expose certain areas.

Technical Data & Assembly Configurations

multidirectional phototherapy configurations thumbnail 7 SolRx E-Series
Shown below, assembly configurations show some of the many ways that different numbers of E-Series devices can be assembled together and individually positioned to conform to any patient body shape. Note: Currently this information is available only for the 2-bulb E720 devices. The equivalent drawings for the larger E740 and E760 are in process.
multidirectional phototherapy performance test thumbnail 7 SolRx E-Series

The Multidirectional vs Flat-Panel Performance Analysis is a Solarc lab test that compares the light distribution performance of these two different full-body device types on an idealized cylindrical body shape of various diameters. It quantifies the ability of the device types to deliver UVB-Narrowband around the patient’s body and compares performance to device cost. It shows, for example, that a 3-device (6-bulb) E-Series E720 assembly can deliver as much total UV-light as a Solarc 1000‑Series model 1790UVB‑NB 10-bulb flat panel.
