Philips UVB-Narrowband Bulbs
Philips /01 colour – Strong 311nm peak – The most common waveband in dermatology.
Also known as: UVB-NB, NB-UVB, NB-311, 311-NB, TL01, TL-01, TL/01, NBUVB, etc.
UVB-Narrowband (Philips /01, strong 311 nm peak)
Almost all SolRx devices are sold as UVB-Narrowband and for most patients it should be the waveband that is tried first.
It is by far the most common choice for psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic-dermatitis (eczema), and Vitamin D deficiency; because it has proven to be very effective and is theoretically safer than the alternatives.
That is why nearly all phototherapy clinics use Philips UVB-NB as the principal treatment.
UVB-Narrowband SolRx devices have an “UVB-NB” or “UVBNB” suffix in the model number, such as 1780UVB-NB.
PHILIPS TL100W/01 6-foot UVB-Narrowband “Long” High Output

This is the original Philips TL/01 Narrowband UVB bulb. Bulb is “F71″ length and measures 70.25″ far-end to far-end and fits many older 6ft UVB-Narrowband devices (Daavlin, NBC, Solarc, Ultralite), and it continues to be widely used in European full body devices. Similar to TL100W/01‑FS72 listed above except longer – check part numbers before ordering. Bulb is about 1/2” too long to be interchangeable with FS72T12 length bulbs (use TL100W/01‑FS72 instead). UVB-Broadband Bulbs
Philips /12 Colour
WARNING: UVB-Broadband bulbs are far less common and have 4 to 5 times more skin-burning potential than their UVB-Narrowband counterparts. UVB-Broadband treatment times and doses are typically much less than those for UVB-Narrowband.
UVB-Broadband (PHILIPS /12, or FS-UVB)
Formerly, the only UVB waveband type available, UVB-Broadband, is sometimes still used for psoriasis, atopic-dermatitis (eczema), and Vitamin D deficiency; but almost never for vitiligo. UVB-Broadband is considered a more aggressive UV-light therapy than UVB-Narrowband, so it is usually reserved for more difficult cases and after first trying UVB-NB. UVB-Broadband treatment times are nominally 4 to 5 times shorter than UVB-Narrowband because UVB-Broadband has much greater skin-burning potential. UVB-Broadband bulbs are available for all four SolRx device families, but UVB-Broadband User’s Manuals are available only for 1000-Series models 1740UVB and 1760UVB, and the 100-Series Handheld model 120UVB Handheld (UVB-Broadband can greatly reduce scalp psoriasis treatment times when using the UV-Brush). UVA Bulbs for PUVA
350nm peak for use with PUVA (Psoralen + UVA) phototherapy

UVA (PHILIPS /09, 350 nm peak, for PUVA)
UVA is used for PUVA phototherapy, which is an older treatment that uses the drug Psoralen to first photo-sensitize the skin, and then the skin irradiated using UVA light (and hence the acronym PUVA). PUVA is for the most difficult cases and is complex to administer, so it is usually only done in phototherapy clinics, and usually only after UVB-Narrowband has failed. UVA bulbs are available for all SolRx devices except the 100-Series Handheld. Solarc does not have any UVA or PUVA User’s Manuals, but we can measure UVA device irradiance and we have access to PUVA protocols.

UVA-1 Bulbs
365 nm peak – Philips /10 Colour
UVA-1 (PHILIPS /10, 365 nm peak, for special applications)
UVA-1 is a relatively new and investigative treatment for several challenging skin disorders. Practically, fluorescent devices are useful only for low-dose UVA-1 for possible treatment under physician guidance of scleroderma/morphea and some other skin disorders. Controlled trials for lupus erythematosis have been done using low-dose UVA-1 and the Philips TL100W/10R lamp, but with a special filter to block the shorter wavelengths. High-dose UVA-1 is needed for atopic eczema and some other skin disorders, making metal halide devices with very high irradiance (light intensity) necessary to keep the treatment times reasonable. UVA-1 bulbs are available for all SolRx devices except the E-Series. Solarc does not have any UVA-1 User’s Manuals or filters.

Definitions
- “ENDTYPE” is per the pictures shown below.
- “WATTS” is the rated electrical input power per bulb.
- “DIA” is the NOMINAL glass tube outer diameter, where: T12 = 1 1/2 inches (38mm), T8 = 1 inches (26mm), T5 = 5/8 inches (16mm), T4 = 1/2 inches (12mm).
- “Compact Fluorescent” (CFL) bulbs have two glass tubes and a plastic endcap at one end only.
- “L” is the bulb’s TOTAL length in inches (+/- 1/8″) and INCLUDES THE ENDCAPS OR PINS (far-end to far-end). L is most easily determined with the bulb positioned vertically with one end on the floor or a table, and the length to the other end measured upward using a tape measure, ideally with the top measurement set using a square guide rather than just by eye.
- For most Philips bulbs, the “phosphor” colour is embedded in the part number, with definitions: /01 for Narrowband UVB 311 nm, /12 for Broadband UVB, /09 for UVA (PUVA), and /10 for UVA-1.
- When “HO” is included in a part number, it means “High Output” (not applicable to Philips bulbs or any compact fluorescent bulbs).
- When “BL” is included in a part number, it means “Black Light”, which is another term for UVA.

ENDTYPE = RDC “Recessed Double Contact” (R17d) RDC ends have a plastic adapter covering two metallic contacts. This design is used to prevent medical UVB bulbs from being used in tanning equipment, which are usually bi-pin. Philips TL100W/01‑FS72 UVB-Narrowband shown. Note: “FSX” bulbs, such as FSX72T12/UVB/HO, use this endtype but, instead of each end having the same alignment relative to each other, one end is rotated ninety (90) degrees (axially) to the other, so they make an “X” when viewed in from the end. The FSX bulb design further limits the number of devices that can operate the bulb. The FSX bulb was/is used extensively by National Biological Corp., on their line of UVB-Broadband equipment. Philips does not make any UVB-Narrowband “FSX” type lamps.

ENDTYPE = SLIMLINE “Slimline” Slimline ends have one single large 5/16″ (8mm) diameter pin, about 5/16″ (8mm) long. In UVB medical phototherapy applications, they were only used on 6-foot long FS72T12/UVB/SL (SL=SlimLine) bulbs. Their nominal bulb power is 56 watts. Slimline bulbs are being phased out in favour of 85 and 100 watt bulbs using the RDC endtype.

ENDTYPE = BI-PIN “Medium Bi-Pin” Bi-pin ends have two metallic pins each about 1/4″ (6-7mm) long spaced 1/2″ (12-13mm) apart. This is the same pin arrangement as found on many standard fluorescent tubes. The bi-pin arrangement is being phased out to prevent use of medical UVB bulbs in standard fixtures.
